The Talgo XXI is a push-pull operative trainset with one
(1) or two (2) Talgo locomotives located at either/both end of the
trainset depending on the length and configuration of the trainset.
The passenger cars are Talgo's latest design generation. There are
two basic versions of the locomotive: 1) diesel; and, 2) electric.
The design and technological principles of the North American version
of the Talgo XXI locomotives are based on the European version,
the Talgo BT. The main differences are: 1) the Talgo locomotive
will be equipped with two (2) sets of powered trucks (as opposed
to one (1) set in the Talgo BT); and, 2) it will be fully
compliant with all United States applicable FRA regulations and/or
APTA standards (as opposed to UIC, International Standards, for
the Talgo BT).
Some of the main characteristics of the Talgo locomotive will be:
-
Full compliance with Tier I FRA applicable regulations and/or
with all applicable APTA, AAR, NTSB, FDA and EPA standards.
-
US operational speed: 125mph (diesel/electric version). (European
operational speed: 135 mph diesel version, and 140 electric
version.)
-
Equipped with a three (3) MJ Crash Energy Management System
and roof escape hatch.
-
Weight (estimated): 180,000 lbs.
-
Main engine: Detroit Diesel -MTU V16 4000.
-
Engine power: 5440 horsepower (4000kW - 2000 kW per power
head) at 1,800 rpm
-
Fuel tank size/capacity: Approx. 700 gallons
-
Power at wheel: 1,972 horsepower (1,450 kW)
-
HEP Power: 200 kVA Short trains may operate with a single
traction unit and a combination cab/baggage car, for example,
at the other end.
